THE CASA DELLA CARITÀ AND SOUQ FILM FESTIVAL - let us introduce ourselves:

Arriving this year to its VIII edition, SOUQ Film Festival is a film contest that since 2012 takes place at Milan during the month of November and is encouraged by Fondazione Casa della Carità “Angelo Abriani” through its Centro Studi sulla Sofferenza Urbana - SOUQ .

The Casa della carità is a foundation that believes in dignity and the uniqueness of every person, in the value of listening, and the importance of relationships. Free of charge, every year we help 4.500 people in need and promote cultural activities based on social unrest and social exclusion.Born by the will of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini and chaired by Don Virginio Colmegna.

SOUQ Film Festival has always committed to select and encourage films that talk about immigration, poverty and mental suffering, told not as a problem, but as a resource and new energy for the city.

The mission of the festival is to celebrate the wealth of diversity, to value social inclusion and social cohesion, and promote citizens’ rights, using the immediacy of film language.

The festival is dedicated to short films in contest and to feature films not in contest, that talk about contradictions and problems that main big cities of the world have in common , presenting stories of sufferance, exclusion, vulnerability, social problems offering an interesting and positive way out.

Films that often don’t find place in other contexts.

On the seven past editions we have had more than 200 films sighed by directors from 40 different countries.

Among them, “Un paese di Calabria” by Shu Aiello and Catherine Catella , who had the merit to get Riace known, at the center of political debate related to the welcoming of migrants; ”Io sto con la sposa”, a real cinematographic case of 2014, and “ Sea Sorrow”, a debut directing by the Oscar Winner actress Vanessa Redgrave.

The short films have been selected throughout an international contest in the fiction film, documentary film, and animated film category that compete for the two cash awards: Jury award(composed by directors, journalists, experts in cinema and important members of culture and social work) a and Public Award.

To these two Awards, there have been two added, a Special Award , assigned for the first time in 2018 by a jury composed of homeless people who attend the services of the Casa della Carità, and one assigned by the students of the Intercultural Education course of the Catholic University of Milan.

The festival, absolutely free of charge, is divided in three days of film viewing and debates, led by experts, who link the content of the films to the socio-political context with an international and intercultural outlook.

SOUQ Film Festival has the sponsorship of: Lombardia Film Commission; Tomorrow. Leggi Milano domain; Tutto Digitale; Cinematti e Affari Italiani.

THE AIM OF THIS CAMPAIGN

The main aim is to promote the festival so that the values of inclusion and social cohesion can be disseminated to a broad public, the enhancement of diversity as an element of wealth and not fear, as well as the promotion of citizenship rights , through cinema.

We want to introduce projects of inclusion in the world through directors and their films .

We want to create, through the workshops , moments of technical and sharing learning that are stimulating and new productions related to the themes of the festival. Those who already have experience in the audio-visual sector will be able to learn how to approach social issues; those who work in the social fields can experiment with new ways of sharing their own work experiences.

WORKSHOPS – New this year:

There will be formative moments, meetings and exchanges between the participants and professionals. It shall be an occasion to reflect on the topics told, paying attention on the technique but also the care towards social topics.

There will be formative moments, meetings and exchanges between the participants and professionals. It shall be an occasion to reflect on the topics told, paying attention on the technique but also the care towards social topics.

How they will be structured:

There will be 3 meetings, that take place in 3 hours per meeting. Focusing on the production steps of a document or fictional film : starting from the idea, to the script, to the realization, to the distribution. Furthermore, through case studies, an ad hoc moment will be proposed where the production phases will be analysed focusing on the main topics of the festival: immigration and human rights.

To whom do we aim:
